how it works (in a nutshell)

you can only register a domain name if no-one else has already registered it.

you register a domain name with a registrar. the registrar simply keeps a record of the fact that the name belongs to you, just like holding a title to a section of land.

many companies act as registrars, they are authorised by a domain name authority to act on their behalf. some popular registrars in New Zealand are freeparking, orcon and domainz.

when you register a domain name with a registrar they will charge you a fee to register the domain name for one year. on every anniversary of registering your domain name, the registrar will charge you a fee to register your domain name for one more year. a registrar may charge you whatever they like to register a domain name for a year, but typically it is around the NZ$40.00 + GST mark.

you do not have to have a website to register a domain name. good registrars will "park" the domain name for you for free until your website is up and running. once your website is ready to go you can "point" the domain name at your new website. a good registrar will not charge you to "point" you domain name at your website.
