klixo is web 2.0by Daniel Larsen, Manager, Klixo Limited. As the web grows and matures we are seeing a new generation of websites and applications that represent a newer, better way for the web, and pundits are terming this new wave "Web 2.0". what is web 2.0?In his essay "What is Web 2.0", Tim O'Reilly has defined Web 2.0 by comparison. In Web 1.0 we used to share content between websites by "scraping" the content off the screens, in Web 2.0 we share content with RSS and web services. In the old days we would buy lots of domain names to improve our search rankings, now we use search engine optimisation techniques to improve the content of our sites for our users and the search engine robots. I define the Web 2.0 as any website that puts the user first, truly embracing the web as a new interactive media where users can not only consume the media, but also customise contribute, and control it. But Web 2.0 is not without its problems. The rush to create new applications has led some developers to forget the basics: web applications must be highly scalable as well as secure and they must perform well. The obsession with dynamic web pages means that much more pressure is placed on a single, central database which must perform flawlessly every single time a user requests a web page, creating a single point of failure. When this point fails, the result is a dead website and angry users as some Web 2.0 websites like TypePad, del.icio.us and Bloglines recently found out. Klixo is in its sixth year of development and over that time I have made scalability a high priority which is why the Klixo Website Management software uses offline processing techniques to keep websites running even during a catastrophic failure. In May 2005, Klixo's premises were devastated by a flash flood and landslide. We lost internet, phone and power services, and were evacuated from our premises to never return, but not one Klixo website experienced any form of outage during that time. We have also used the AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript And XML) methodology to implement various website features including dynamic page menu systems. Klixo is Web 2.0 personified: an easy to use, empowering web service that will scale and evolve with the demand for better applications for the web.
